Tulip Fest at Grateful

April 16, 2022 Katrina McAlexander

I want to welcome you all to come visit our Tulip Fields from 10-6pm open daily. The first blooms have just started and we have many beautiful yellow and cream colored tulips that started to bloom in the snow. I don’t know any other tougher living thing than a tulip and their grit always inspires me as a new farmer. They were literally blooming in snow showers and freezing temperatures all week. #gratefulfarmer

In the Fall of 2020 I had a dream of planting a bright and cheery Tulip field next to Grateful for everyone to be able to enjoy as a gift of beauty for my community. The last few years have been so intense and stressful with Covid as a farmer that I find that sharing beauty, being generous and practicing gratitude have been the cure for my farmers heart when it gets anxious for the future. So we planted over 20,000 multi-colored tulips bulbs and waited with hope for the coming Spring. Thankfully last spring of 2021 they all popped up with so much joy. It was like walking in a field of my dreams. #ifyoubuildittheywillcome

We so enjoyed everyone who came out and visited to take photos, painted, got engaged, celebrated their mothers and or picked a tulip bouquet. We DO NOT charge a fee to visit our Tulip Field but ask you all to consider sharing a donations for ALL photograpy and ask for $1/stem for bouquets so we can purchase more tulip bulbs each year

Tulip Bulbs are quite the delicious snack for our pesky gophers and we need to replace many bulbs each year so all donations go towards that cause. Donate what you can and if we work together it will always be enough) Remember to Bring your own scissors this year too as most of ours were most likely accidentally taken last year.

Remember we are open daily and that we are a working farm and ask that our guests come bewteen the hours of 10am-6pm and make all landscape or family photography/bouquet/art projects through the Venmo App (@mtvieworchards) as we do not have an employee working besides the tulip field and we are all out on the farm farming. Much Appreciated, your grateful farmers, Trina and Kenny

The Grateful Vineyard our Tasting room is OPEN Monday through Friday 3-6pm and Weekends 12-6pm I strongly encourage you to make a tasting appointment so it will ensure you have a table if you want to stay for some refreshments or deep nourishment. We do accept walk ins when we have the table space. The Grateful Vineyard is open to ALL ages. We also can accommodate large groups from 12-to 50 so call first for more details 541-399-6665

To make a donation please download the VENMO app and look for our farm account @mtvieworchards to help support the #tulipsforthepeople #afarmthatgivesback Beauty Project, xo your grateful farmers Trina and Kenny (Hope to see you all soon on the farm to enjoy the hope of spring together)

Blossoms, tulips, bees and new trees

April 5, 2022 Katrina McAlexander

This morning is was snowing on the farm on the 5th of April, 2022. The weather has felt very dramatic these past weeks and I personally am longing for warmer days. Kenny, Ruthie and I are running our 4 electric fans a few nights a week hoping that through the process of inversion we can warm the orchard up a few degrees to protect our baby buds and first blossoms. I do feel a little groggy the next day but is all about us protecting the coming harvest that we start harvesting in in early July with cherries and berries.

Some of you remember that I decided to plant over 20,000 tulips in the fall of 2020 because I wanted to plant more beauty for the guests of our farm to be able enjoy outdoors in the spring during the Covid-Pandemic. Flowers are a great way to express your feelings to someone as each flower will always have its own special meaning. The most common meanings of tulips are:

Perfect or Deep Love

The most known meaning of tulips is perfect and deep love. As tulips are a classic flower that has been loved by many for centuries they have been attached with the meaning of love. They’re ideal to give to someone who you have a deep, unconditional love for, whether it’s your partner, children, parents or siblings.

Rebirth

As tulips bloom at the beginning of spring they also have a meaning of rebirth. If you know someone who is going through some life changes, taking on new adventures and challenges or have welcomed a new addition to the family, a lovely bouquet of tulips would make a wonderful gift.

Charity

Since the Victorian era tulips have also been a symbol of charity. With its cheerful nature and mark of a new season and new beginnings, many charities today still use the beloved tulip flower to represent them. (Side note our tulips are growing more and more each day but they are not quite in bloom yet. Last year they came in full around Mothers Day in May)

Have you tried our 2021 Estate Sparkling Riesling? Its dry and full of delicious bubbles.

Fridays on the farm 3-4-22

March 4, 2022 Katrina McAlexander

The first signs of spring always makes my heart sing. Now please don’t get me wrong. I love living on my families farm and feel lucky to enjoy all four seasons. In fact-longing for the coming season is a very hopeful reach for me on my hardest days most uncertain days on the farm. As you know absolutely everything is out of our control. Including the weather, global market, fuel prices, world conflicts, supply chain issues and labor shortages. This winter has felt rich in answered prayers and wild hope thankfully. I am grateful

I want to introduce you to our wine maker the Grateful Vineyard. Ali Mayfield is an independent winemaker based in Walla Walla, WA. Mentored by the late Stan Clarke, she completed the viticulture and enology program at Walla Walla Community College in 2007. Ali has honed her craft at Long Shadows Vintners, Corliss Estates, and Tranche Cellars, working alongside winemakers such as Gilles Nicault, Kendall Mix, and consultant Claude Gros.

As consulting winemaker at Foundry Vineyards, Ali's first vintage of 2011 Chardonnays earned scores of 92 and 94 (Editors Choice) from the Wine Enthusiast - among the highest Chardonnay scores garnered by a female winemaker in Washington State. The 2011 Stainless Chardonnay was also listed as one of Wine Enthusiast's "2013 Top 100" wines.

Focusing on small-lot, handcrafted wines, Ali is passionate about every step of the winemaking process. Her "leave no stone unturned" approach begins by hand-picking vineyards and constant, thoughtful care of their fruit. As she puts it, "Constantly striving to be better, pushing your boundaries, taking risks...that's how you create beautiful wines."

We are so delighted to have her on our team and look forward to releasing our wines soon.

Good news-Carlos the steer made it through another long winter and has been enjoying the sunshine and his salt lick. He is 23 years old this year and we are so thankful to have him on the farm as our adorable mascot. Walking down to say hi to him if a big part of everyones experience when they come visit the farm/vineyard so if you have never met him ask someone at Grateful to point you in the direction of Carlos our beloved steer.

farming with this amazing man has been a wild dream come true

We are grateful for another year to plant and believe for a harvest of food, flowers and fermented sips on the farm. Thank you for your continued support and back of our small family farming dreams. xo your grateful farmers, Katrina and Kenny.

Honeycrisp apples are a favorite @mtvieworchards and today we are going to be sharing some forward with our local food bank. Apples are extremely rich in important antioxidants, flavanoids, and dietary fiber. The phytonutrients and antioxidants in apples may help reduce the risk of developing cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. @mtvieworchards we believe everyone deserves to enjoy the best of our 2018 local apple harvests. We have them in our farm stand as well if you want to pick some up for your lunches. #mtvieworchards #afarmthatcares #afarmthatgathers #afarmthatgivesback #apples #honeycrisps
